Advice and Expose'

Family abuse in the name of child protection is common. In a massive study of Oregon's CSD/SCF agency, researchers from Southern Maine University concluded two thousand or more children in Oregon alone are removed unnecessarily from their homes annually. A number of grassroots organizations have sprung up in response to overzealous Children's Services behavior. Some of them are listed here:

http://www.nccpr.org/index.html The National Coalition for Child Protection Reform began at Harvard in 1991, and is still putting finishing touches on its website. They have a great deal of information for those wishing to conduct research. Good things do sometimes come from the East Coast.

http://www.justiceforfamilies.com/   An excellent expose' that says just what CPR says about the evils of America's child protection industry.  This site was made known to CPR in January, 2000.

Joseph's Poem - a lengthy piece written by a system veteran that goes a long way toward explaining how the system works, and why it's abusive.

http://www.abuse-excuse.com/ Another expose', saying Children's Services is out of control and is a threat to your family. They offer a legislative history, advice, and a web-ring for fathers' rights.

http://www.cpswatch.com  A site that does just what it says....watches the watchers.

Tricks of the Trade   How New Hampshire Children's Services shows the shining path oft traveled by Oregon and other states.

Oregon Family Rights   Lots of annoying graphics, but plenty of good information on Children's Services.   Optimized for Oregon.

http://www.sacbee.com/news/news/old/local02_19991114.html   If you thought foster care is "safe" for children - think again!   This news article scratches the surface....

http://www.time.com/   Time Magazine's foster care expose from November, 2000.  Long and excellent, but you have to pay for it.

http://people.ne.mediaone.net/werme/dcyf.html    Another good expose' website.  Lots of weblinks and documents to peruse.

Michigan Exposed - A long missive on Children's Services actual practices, from an experienced, angry, family law attorney.

Out of Control - Another missive on Children's Services actual practices; with some history thrown in.

Former Foster Children and Parents - A website for former foster kids to share experiences and try to contact lost family members.

http://robtshepherd.tripod.com/medinaerth.html - A site with a very loooong and alarmist first page.  Those who can wade through it will find some interesting links toward the bottom.

Children's Services Protects Foster Care Abusers - If you thought the system was as hard on its own as it would be on you, try this one for size.

http://www.profane-justice.org   Suzanne Shell's website.  If you are in Colorado and need advice, she's the one to contact.  Just please be respectful of her time, she's trying to lead a semi-normal life, in addition to helping dozens of people.

http://www.vocal.org/nasvo.htm This is the homepage of Victims of Child Abuse Laws (VOCAL). The site offers advice for dealing with Children's Services, law enforcement, and attorneys. Material on this website is scary. You probably will have trouble believing it, at first. Jane and I found the material all too true. The site offers the a variety of useful web links.

http://www.religioustolerance.org/cps_vict.htm More advice on how to deal with false accusations of abuse, from Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance.

http://www.cirp.org/library/legal/dwyer2/ An anti-family advocate "debunks" the concept of parental rights. If you didn't think it possible that someone would actually try to make families obsolete in America - read this!

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/little/readings/westman.html A PBS piece which also attempts to debunk parent's rights. Starts out with clucking about crime, then toward apple-pie parenting, then to the real aim: "We need a new paradigm in which parenthood is a privilege, as it is now for adoptive and foster parents, rather than a biological right." How twisted, how collectivist, how fallen, how scary.

http://www.execpc.com/~jfish/bkrvws/outcntrl.txt A conservative reviews a conservative's book, and likes it. The title, Out of Control: Who's Watching Our Child Protection Agencies? says it all. The review is fairly lengthy and points to author's substantial bonafides.

Academic Resources

If you wish to study family abuse by reviewing academic studies directly - good luck! I've been utterly unable to locate studies which overtly question whether Children's Services is doing any good at all. The only funding available for clinical studies comes from the government, and from large private (um, socially progressive) foundations. Finding a study overtly critical of the system has been like finding positive press on Newt Gingrich! However, a good mind and critical eye can secure valid data from even biased sources. Here are a few places to start:

http://www.ipt-forensics.com/journal/   This site contains a number of clinical expose's of Children's Services with plenty of stats and quotes.

http://www.ndacan.cornell.edu/ A great repository for worthwhile national data, mostly in .PDF format. Cornell has done everyone a good favor with its National Data Archive. Site also contains some good web links.

http://www.eighthcity.com/Articles/Rogerbrown/rogerbrown.htm    This guy is over the top with his name-calling and cynicism.  Read his work anyway.  His research is brilliant.  If you want to know about perverse funding incentives for Children's Services, this is THE place to go.

.http://home.rica.net/rthoma/    Excellent clinical expose of Children's Services practices, complete with plenty of quotes, citations, and statistics.

http://www.cwp.pdx.edu A great repository for Oregon-related studies. Everyone there has been wonderfully helpful. CPR feels a little guilty, as they shall hate us when they see the negative things we pull from their studies.

http://www.orednet.org/~bpsst/risc/catalog/cacat.html The very best Oregon repository of current public policy and data.

http://hometown.aol.com/webbhouse/myhomepage/business.html   An organized attempt by and for foster care parents to gain some protection from the agency they serve.  Based in Oregon.

http://www.leaderu.com/ftissues/ft9408/wagner.html   An unsypathetic history of child abuse industry.

http://www.tc.umn.edu/nlhome/g012/under006/Library/TherapState.html   Another unsympathetic history and current practice of the child abuse industry, with plenty of footnotes.

http://www.ll.georgetown.edu/lr/rs/family.html Georgetown's website has links to Health and Human Services (HHS) and to the American Bar Association kids policy page. A little light on clinical studies, but a gold mine on law.

http://people.biola.edu/faculty/paulp/   This page lists clinical studies that debunk the tired liberal thesis that all spanking is abuse, that spanking teaches violence, etc.

http://www.hope4kidz.org/LegalLinks.htm   This page gives lots of good government links, legal links, and attorney suggestions.

http://www.protectourfamilies.com/legal.html   This page gives numerous reform suggestions.

http://pcak.net/citizen_guide/cover.htm Kentucky makes a good attempt at reform.

http://www.idealist.org  A clearinghouse for nonprofits.  This site shares networking skills, and has a number of child abuse links.
